About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Proactively develop respectful relationships with First Nations leadership and technical staff
  • Coordinate First Nations relations activities across the BCER, support multiple priorities, maintain records, and brief supervisors and senior management
  • Develop and coordinate capacity funding, community engagement, education programs, and special projects involving First Nations and Indigenous people in environmental stewardship, land reclamation, consultation, emergency response, and other regulatory activities
  • Liaise with internal subject matter experts and work across departments to coordinate, advise, and support First Nations issues and interests
  • Monitor internal and external projects and initiatives for consistency with BCER policies and strategic goals
  • Research and develop approaches to relationship building, business process improvement, Alignment of Laws processes, decision-making, engagement, communications, and related products
  • Develop, coordinate, implement, and monitor reconciliation projects and recommend improvements
  • Prepare written and oral communications, including presentations, briefing notes, blog posts, and newsletters, for internal and external audiences
  • Identify solutions and strategies for complex, sensitive issues and barriers to change with cross-agency implications
  • Represent the BCER on provincial committees and working groups
  • Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Master’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a related field and three years of relevant experience; or Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience; or Technical diploma in a related field and seven years of relevant experience
  • Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered
  • Experience working with First Nations and Indigenous groups
  • Knowledge of Indigenous issues, governance, case law, and effects of natural resource development on Indigenous people
  • Knowledge of Section 35(1) of the Constitution Act in relation to British Columbia and resource development
  • Knowledge of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, and other relevant federal and provincial policies and legislation
  • Experience planning, developing, organizing, and managing concurrent projects with competing priorities and rigid deadlines
  • Knowledge of statutory decision-making, engagement, and relationship-building processes
  • Experience with interdepartmental coordination and professional multidisciplinary teams
  • Experience leading working groups or participating in committees
  • Experience in multi-party facilitation, negotiations, and conflict resolution in cross-cultural settings with Indigenous groups, stakeholders, and/or government
  • Experience in research and analysis related to land use or resource management
  • Excellent public relations, communication, presentation, and organizational skills
  • Ability to handle highly confidential matters
  • Ability to examine data, draw conclusions, and solve problems
  • Ability to anticipate, identify, clarify, assess, and resolve issues and situations quickly
  • Cultural agility, change management, problem solving and judgement, strategic orientation, and team building competencies
