About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Own the technology for 99Pledges as its only engineer
  • Set the product and engineering roadmap with the GM, product team, and customers
  • Manage donations, automatic payouts, payment-provider reconciliation, retries, idempotency, webhooks, and provider degradation
  • Move AI features from planning to production using evaluations, guardrails, and tenant-safe tool use
  • Use coding agents as part of day-to-day work
  • Improve engineering foundations with trunk-based development, CI, synthetic-data staging, feature flags, test coverage, and reliable deployments
  • Document the codebase, tests, and processes for future engineers
  • Handle fraud detection, device fingerprinting, and abuse prevention
  • Monitor cloud and vendor spending and identify cost-saving opportunities
  • Work directly with operators, school administrators, and partners
  • Own alerting, uptime, incident response, and post-incident follow-up, including weekend incidents during scheduled fundraising campaigns

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Senior generalist able to work across web, data, infrastructure, and AI and learn unfamiliar stacks quickly
  • Production experience handling money, including payment integrations, payouts, reconciliation, or fraud work
  • Experience as the only engineer or clear technical owner of a system, including design, build, deployment, on-call, and customer support during incidents
  • Deep PostgreSQL knowledge, including modeling, querying, tuning production databases, and performing large-table migrations without downtime
  • Experience shipping LLM features to production, including retrieval, tool use, evaluations, and guardrails
  • Track record of improving engineering processes, including trunk-based development, automated testing, and environment discipline
  • Judgment about technical debt and its business impact
  • Clear writing skills
  • Experience with Ruby on Rails 7 and Ruby 3.1
  • Experience with PostgreSQL, HAML, SCSS, Bootstrap, jQuery, Delayed Job, Braintree, PayPal, Dwolla, Stripe, Heroku, AWS S3, Redis, Postmark, Honeybadger, New Relic, Datadog, and PostHog
