About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Manage a portfolio of litigation, arbitration, pre-litigation disputes, investigations, and other matters across multiple jurisdictions from initial assessment through resolution
- Develop litigation strategy with Legal leadership and direct multiple external counsel firms
- Establish matter objectives, work plans, budgets, timelines, staffing expectations, and performance standards
- Coordinate assigned matters among outside counsel, internal legal specialists, business stakeholders, executives, and other relevant parties
- Evaluate claims and potential exposure and recommend litigation and settlement strategies
- Provide practical advice on legal, financial, operational, and reputational risk
- Oversee pleadings, discovery and e-discovery, motion practice, witness and deposition preparation, expert strategy, hearings, trials, arbitrations, settlement negotiations, and appeals
- Manage outside-counsel budgets, invoices, spending, alternative fee arrangements, staffing efficiency, performance, and coordination among multiple firms
- Partner with Compliance, Product, Operations, Finance, Marketing, People, IT/Security, and other teams to gather information, preserve evidence, support litigation strategy, and address recurring litigation risk
- Identify emerging litigation trends and advise Legal leadership and business partners on exposure, mitigation opportunities, and relevant developments
- Develop scalable litigation processes, legal holds, case reporting, outside-counsel guidelines, litigation metrics, playbooks, and other tools
- Manage, coach, and develop Legal team members
- Support broader Legal department priorities and provide practical legal guidance on high-priority or time-sensitive matters
Requirements
What you’ll need- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited U.S. law school
- Active membership in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar
- At least 6 years of post-law-school practicing legal experience
- Substantial experience handling complex litigation and disputes
- Meaningful litigation experience at an excellent law firm is required; candidates may currently be practicing in-house
- Significant experience managing outside litigation counsel and coordinating strategy across multiple external law firms
- Strong working knowledge of federal and state civil litigation and arbitrations, including discovery, e-discovery, privilege, motion practice, settlement strategy, trials, and other core litigation processes
- Ability to independently evaluate complex legal and factual issues, assess risk, establish litigation strategy, and provide concise recommendations to senior stakeholders
- Experience managing litigation budgets and legal spend
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong judgment, organizational skills, and attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple high-priority matters and competing deadlines
- Experience within financial services, fintech, cryptocurrency, technology, or another highly regulated industry is required
- Familiarity with consumer disputes, class actions, regulatory litigation, commercial disputes, securities matters, or other disputes relevant to a regulated financial-services business is preferred
- Legally authorized to work in the United States
