About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Prepare detailed estimates for commercial, institutional, industrial, transportation, and major infrastructure projects
  • Establish and maintain relationships with suppliers, manufacturers, engineers, contractors, clients, and staff
  • Advise clients on new and effective products and services
  • Seek new opportunities, projects, and clients
  • Prepare mechanical budgets from preliminary sketches, specifications, and related information
  • Prepare accurate cost estimates for tendered projects
  • Contact suppliers and trades to obtain quotations
  • Prepare spreadsheets containing supplier information and quotes
  • Coordinate and prepare for pre-tender site tours
  • Participate in project site visits as requested
  • Analyze potential project cost savings
  • Set up estimate data in computer programs
  • Review estimate information, drawings, and supplier bills of materials before tender closing
  • Analyze estimate strengths and disadvantages and prepare and evaluate closing strategies
  • Analyze tender documents and contractual obligations
  • Prepare and deliver quotation letters before closing time with management approvals
  • Obtain client feedback and quotation results
  • Contribute to pre-plan meetings
  • Maintain and update estimating, change order, service, and historical estimate databases
  • Train and support new and existing staff
  • Provide leadership and positive motivation to project staff and company partners
  • Mentor and develop estimators toward Senior Estimator roles
  • Create and maintain benchmark estimate values
  • Manage project budgets and update them as required

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Experience preparing detailed mechanical estimates for commercial, institutional, industrial, transportation, and major infrastructure projects
  • Knowledge of mechanical budgets, preliminary sketches, specifications, tendered projects, supplier quotations, and trade quotations
  • Experience with pre-tender site tours and project site visits
  • Experience analyzing project cost savings
  • Proficiency setting up estimate data in computer programs
  • Ability to review drawings and supplier bills of materials
  • Knowledge of tender documents and contractual obligations
  • Experience maintaining estimating, change order, service, and historical estimate databases
  • Ability to provide training and support on estimating practices, change order procedures, and related software
  • Ability to mentor and develop estimators
  • Ability to create and maintain benchmark estimate values
  • Ability to manage project budgets
  • Ability to build effective relationships with clients, suppliers, manufacturers, engineers, contractors, and staff
