About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Receive classroom and on-the-job training for Construction Equipment Operator
- Demonstrate positive working habits and reliable attendance
- Practice safety procedures, including pre-task planning and hazard identification
- Perform Lock Out Tag Out and other safety requirements
- Identify, select, and properly use tools, equipment, machinery, and materials
- Load, move, and unload materials and equipment to appropriate locations
- Inspect, clean, and service tools, equipment, and machinery
- Operate bulldozers, trench excavators, road graders, backhoes, and other heavy-duty construction or installation equipment
- Use trucks, tractors, power cranes, shovels, graders, and other machinery to load and move dirt, rocks, materials, and equipment
- Load, secure, lift, or hoist materials and equipment using proper hand and audio signals
- Review blueprints, plans, and diagrams to identify work requirements and sequences
- Use lift plans and schematics to excavate, transport, and place materials
- Document material and equipment use and nonconformances
- Locate underground services, including pipes and wires, before beginning work
- Complete at least 144 hours per year of related technical instruction across construction, safety, and concentration/elective areas
- Complete apprenticeship orientation, safety, construction math, tool, drawing, rigging, communication, employability, materials handling, trade, and heavy-equipment training
Requirements
What you’ll need- 0–9 months of experience or 0–1,500 hours as an equipment operator
- Developing knowledge of operating limitations and safe work practices for each piece of equipment
- Executed Medical Examiner's Certificate must be on file before operating
- Commercial driver's license required when equipment is operated on public roads
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- NCCER Heavy Equipment Operations certification/qualification
- NCCER Highway / Heavy Construction certification/qualification
- NCCER Rigger certification/qualification
- NCCER Site Layout certification/qualification
- Ability to complete applicable pre-employment onboarding requirements, including background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search
- Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds
- Ability to work up to 12-hour shifts performing hard physical labor outdoors in varying temperatures and weather
- Ability to work in cramped, cluttered, uneven, and confined spaces
- Ability to climb and maintain balance on steel framework, stairs, ladders, and scaffolds
- Ability to use hands for repetitive handling and control of tools or equipment
- Ability to work around hazardous equipment and in distracting or uncomfortable noise levels
