About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Own and continuously maintain the automation roadmap for an assigned business unit
  • Prioritize automation investments using labor, cost, savings, capital, and schedule economics
  • Lead make-versus-buy decisions for automation systems
  • Partner with design and engineering teams to apply design-for-automation principles upstream
  • Architect AI-enabled automation including machine-generated programming, ML-based inspection, and agentic planning
  • Use AI assistants for code generation, documentation, and design acceleration
  • Identify or build reusable automation tools for the Factory Automation group
  • Champion a single digital thread from model-based definition through MES/work-order systems to machines and live-data return paths
  • Translate roadmap items into scoped projects for central Factory Automation build teams
  • Remain accountable through design reviews, prototyping, commissioning, and production hand-off
  • Ensure cells include maintenance basis, spares position, and telemetry hooks
  • Build and defend financial cases covering payback, capital intensity, and savings ramp
  • Serve as the trusted automation authority for the assigned business unit
  • Report within the central Factory Automation Group while working within a specific Blue Origin business unit

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 8+ years in automation, controls, or robotics engineering
  • Hands-on design and integration of custom robotic cells and special machines from start to finish
  • Experience owning automation strategy or a multi-project roadmap across a product line or facility
  • Deep knowledge of Siemens, Rockwell, or Beckhoff PLC/controls platforms
  • Knowledge of KUKA, FANUC, or ABB industrial robots
  • Knowledge of motion systems and vision systems
  • Understanding of IT/OT interconnectivity across PLM/MBD, MES, ERP, PLC, SCADA, robots, and historians
  • Practical fluency with AI-enabled automation approaches
  • Make-versus-buy and build-versus-integrator judgment
  • Financial literacy including payback, NPV, and capital intensity
  • Experience applying design-for-manufacturing/design-for-automation principles
  • Strong grasp of machining, welding, sheet-metal fabrication, and assembly processes
  • Knowledge of safety and ergonomic standards for industrial automation
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder-influence skills
  • Willingness to embed on-site with the assigned business unit and travel between Blue facilities
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident/current Green Card holder, or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum
  • Required Blue's Standard Background Check
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in electrical engineering, mechatronics, automation, or a related field is preferred
  • Preferred experience with system integrators/custom industrial automation companies, OPC UA, MQTT, historians, edge computing, network/security architecture, MBD/PMI, digital-thread/MES architecture, internal automation tools, cost-decomposition analysis, aerospace or regulated manufacturing, CNC integration, SCADA platforms, mechanical drawings, 3D layouts, robot simulations, and project/ticket management
