About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Serve as technical authority for turbomachinery products from concept through qualification and production
  • Own the turbomachinery technical development roadmap
  • Establish design guidelines, key design parameters, margin requirements, analysis methods, validation rigor, and documentation expectations
  • Adjudicate architecture trades including staging, speed, machine type, rotor support, seal selection, and configuration
  • Own the interface between turbomachinery design and system performance and operability
  • Identify turbomachinery-driven system constraints and resolve them with systems engineers
  • Baseline turbomachinery products at lifecycle gates and define design review success criteria
  • Own performance predictions, margins, and validated models forming each product’s technical basis
  • Perform or direct meanline, CFD, secondary flow/seal, structural, dynamic loading/forced response, and rotordynamic analyses
  • Drive continuous improvement of analysis tools, methods, and automation
  • Represent the turbomachinery branch in program-level reviews, trade studies, and key decisions
  • Mentor engineers in turbomachinery fundamentals, engineering judgment, and design standards
  • Support hardware build, assembly, acceptance testing, and anomaly investigation
  • Provide engineering dispositions for non-conforming hardware
  • Maintain design requirements and documentation and contribute artifacts to SRR, PDR, CDR, MRR, and TRR reviews
  • Travel expected up to 25% of the time

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering, with emphasis on turbomachinery, fluid mechanics, or thermodynamics
  • 10+ years of experience in turbomachinery design and analysis for aerospace propulsion systems
  • 5+ years with technical decision-making authority over multi-discipline turbomachinery development
  • Ability to perform or critically evaluate meanline aerodynamic design, CFD, secondary flow and seal modeling, structural analysis, dynamic loading and forced response, and rotordynamics
  • Understanding of margins required for safe turbomachinery designs
  • Knowledge of turbomachinery/system-level performance interactions
  • Experience establishing design processes, analysis standards, and margin frameworks
  • Track record taking turbomachinery products from concept through hardware with personal accountability for the technical baseline
  • Proficiency with commercial analysis tools (ANSYS suite or equivalent) and scripting for analysis automation (Python preferred)
  • Familiarity with relevant AIAA/AGMA design practices
  • Experience working in cross-disciplinary engineering teams
  • U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident, or lawfully admitted refugee/asylee status required under export control regulations
  • Background check required
  • Preferred: 15+ years of relevant industry experience
  • Preferred: Experience with rocket propulsion turbomachinery, closed-loop cycle designs, additive manufacturing, non-traditional rotor support systems, transient operability analysis, NASA GFSSP/Sinda/FLUINT or equivalent, parametric cost modeling, rocket propulsion or gas turbine OEM experience, and AI-assisted engineering tools
