About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Design, build, run, and improve backend systems across multiple mobile products
- Take problems from unclear starting points through architecture, implementation, deployment, and iteration
- Investigate systems not originally built by the engineer
- Work directly with product, frontend, data, and other engineers
- Improve existing systems and determine when rewrites are unnecessary
- Respond to and help resolve production incidents
- Understand system context, upstream and downstream effects, scaling risks, and engineering trade-offs
- Document decisions, communicate directly, and focus on outcomes
- Move between products, codebases, and technical contexts as priorities change
Requirements
What you’ll need- Usually 5+ years of backend engineering experience
- Experience designing or significantly changing backend systems
- Experience making architectural decisions and explaining trade-offs
- Experience working with databases beyond using an ORM
- Experience operating and debugging services in production
- Understanding of infrastructure
- Experience taking work from an unclear problem to a shipped result
- Ability to learn new technology when needed
- Ability to become productive in Go; production Go experience is useful
- Strong backend experience in another language may be acceptable with evidence of quickly learning new stacks
- Understanding of relational databases, schema design, migrations, indexing, and query behaviour
- Understanding of distributed systems, message queues, and brokers such as Kafka
- Understanding of Docker and Kubernetes
- Understanding of cloud infrastructure and APIs
- Understanding of observability, performance, reliability, and failure modes
