About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Review tax returns prepared by the team
  • Sign tax returns under the reviewer’s own PTIN and make judgment calls
  • Prepare some tax returns, especially during the early stages
  • Handle US federal and state returns for small businesses and individuals, especially Schedule C and S corporation clients
  • Use Drake for the 2026 tax year, subject to possible future changes
  • Explain tax returns and positions to clients in plain language
  • Provide tax planning and advisory services where needed
  • Optionally partner with leaders to develop processes and policies for the new tax practice
  • Optionally help screen and train an overseas tax-preparation team
  • Optionally join prospective-client calls as the tax expert
  • Coordinate with bookkeeping teams as needed
  • Report directly to the CEO
  • Work alongside another signer initially and future tax preparers as the team expands

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Active, unrestricted CPA or EA; US CPA licenses only
  • Current state license is a plus, not a requirement
  • Minimum 5+ years in US tax; 10+ years strongly preferred
  • Experience reviewing and signing returns for clients (strictly required)
  • Adaptable and eager to learn new technologies and systems
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Patience to explain complex tax concepts to clients with no accounting background
  • Fully fluent in English
  • Partner-level experience in a tax firm is a plus
  • Familiarity with Drake is a plus
  • Familiarity with QuickBooks Online is a plus
  • Comfort with AI tools is a plus
  • Must be comfortable working in a new tax practice without extensive predefined structure
