About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Serve as chief legal officer and primary legal advisor to the CEO, Executive Committee, leadership teams, and Boards of Directors
  • Participate with executive leadership in strategy execution, operational excellence initiatives, and general leadership of the business
  • Lead identification, assessment, escalation, and mitigation of enterprise legal risks
  • Oversee, draft, review, negotiate, and advise on complex commercial and strategic agreements
  • Develop and maintain contract templates, playbooks, SOPs, intake processes, escalation standards, and legal risk frameworks
  • Advise on healthcare regulatory and commercial compliance matters
  • Coordinate litigation, disputes, investigations, privileged reviews, preservation obligations, settlement strategy, and external counsel management
  • Provide legal support for product launches, advertising and promotion, medical-device regulatory issues, AI governance, cybersecurity, privacy-adjacent issues, trade secrets, and emerging legal risks
  • Develop and deliver legal training and practical tools for business stakeholders
  • Manage Legal department resources, budget, outside counsel, legal operations, team structure, staffing, performance expectations, and professional development
  • Advise Boards, CEO, Executive Committee, and management on corporate governance, fiduciary considerations, delegated authority, decision rights, and governance processes
  • Support Board and committee operations, including agendas, meeting materials, minutes, resolutions, written actions, officer appointments, entity records, and corporate approvals
  • Improve governance frameworks and documentation of corporate actions
  • Coordinate with Finance, Global Legal, Compliance, and business stakeholders on delegations of authority, corporate housekeeping, entity management, and governance controls
  • Provide strategic governance and legal compliance support for corporate initiatives, operational reviews, risk assessments, leadership transitions, and executive or Board-level matters
  • Report directly to the CEO of BMT with a dotted line to Global Headquarters Legal leadership and collaborate with global legal and compliance counterparts

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
  • Admitted to practice law by the Minnesota State Bar Association in the State of Minnesota
  • 12+ years’ legal experience
  • Significant experience within the medical device, life sciences, healthcare or other closely related industry
  • Experience leading legal functions, driving organizational change, and supporting business growth through strategic legal counsel
  • Expertise in commercial contracting and providing practical, business-oriented legal advice across commercial and operational matters
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgement, manage competing priorities, and navigate complex legal and business issues with minimal supervision
  • Exceptional business acumen and ability to deliver practical, risk-based, actionable legal advice
  • Excellent executive communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to influence, negotiate, and build credibility with stakeholders, senior leadership, and Boards of Directors
  • Collaborative, enterprise-minded leadership style
  • Ability to partner across Legal & Compliance, Commercial, Marketing, Finance, Regulatory, R&D, Quality, Human Resources and other cross-functional teams
