About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Conduct echocardiograms, including transesophageal, cardiac stress, and transthoracic studies, on patients of all ages in critical and non-critical settings
  • Correlate requested procedures with patient clinical history and symptoms and verify appropriate clinical indications
  • Recognize abnormalities and obtain additional images as needed for diagnosis and treatment
  • Perform tests according to laboratory protocols and guidelines and document exceptions
  • Follow approved techniques and policies for IV insertion and management
  • Prepare and administer ultrasound enhancing agents according to policy and procedures
  • Observe sterile technique to prevent cross-contamination
  • Familiarize patients with tests and preparation and obtain relevant patient and clinical information
  • Operate ultrasound equipment and acquire data for blood-flow velocity measurements
  • Differentiate artifacts from anatomic and pathologic structures and measure appropriate echocardiographic structures
  • Measure cardiac wall thicknesses, chamber sizes, blood-flow velocities, cardiac physiology, and valve areas
  • Document and transmit diagnostic and patient data to the digital archive system
  • Identify urgent critical findings and notify the appropriate healthcare provider
  • Maintain a safe work environment and follow hospital policies for safety, equipment maintenance, and operation
  • Maintain professional credentials and complete required echo-specific CME
  • Participate in departmental quality assurance and accreditation data activities
  • Maintain current professional knowledge of vascular disease
  • Perform minor preventive equipment maintenance and clean and stock laboratories
  • Travel to different facilities as required

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • College-level courses in Echocardiography with extensive technical training/experience in anatomy and disease; an Associate degree; or a Bachelor's Degree in Echocardiography from an accredited college preferred
  • Must hold RDCS or RCS from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Cardiac Credentialing International (CCI) registry
  • Registry-eligible candidates must achieve registry within one year of placement into this job
  • BLS required upon hire or within six months of hire
  • Basic PC skills to operate department database and office programs
  • Ability to work and communicate with managers, employees, physicians, and customers
  • Ability to work effectively within a small work group, including conflict handling, issue resolution, and problem-solving
  • Professional manner with all individuals
  • Ability to lift bulky or moderately heavy weights up to 50 pounds and occasionally assist with heavier tasks
  • Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served
  • BMH-based employees cross-training between adult and pediatric sonography must achieve pediatric echocardiography competency within six months from the start of pediatric training
