About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform routine Respiratory Care procedures according to established standards in General Patient Care areas
  • Work under direct supervision of a therapist in Adult Critical Care, Pediatric and Neonatal Critical Care, and Emergency Department units
  • Direct and oversee associates assigned to work with the therapist during advanced procedures such as mechanical ventilation
  • Demonstrate competencies specific to populations receiving direct patient care
  • Perform as an integral part of the patient care team
  • Assess patients' respiratory status using chart/monitor review and physical assessment
  • Perform basic respiratory care procedures, including oxygen delivery and medication administration
  • Assemble, check, and correct malfunctions associated with Respiratory Care equipment
  • Under LRT supervision, perform measurements/calculations and assist in determining mechanical ventilation parameters
  • Under LRT supervision, perform emergency and acute Respiratory Care procedures
  • Communicate appropriately and effectively with the healthcare team regarding patient care
  • Communicate regularly with the shift charge therapist about area activity and availability
  • Participate in department performance improvement activities
  • Assume responsibility for professional development

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited program for Respiratory Care
  • Experience in an acute care setting preferred
  • Successful completion of Therapist Multiple-Choice Examination (TMC) within 90 days from date of graduation
  • Must acquire Licensure from the State of Michigan; Graduate Respiratory Therapist status maintained until the license is granted
  • Current BLS certification
  • Satisfactory performance on the respiratory care medication competency test
  • Completion of hospital, core, and department-specific orientation requirements
  • Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from computer systems and equipment
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing; accurately record activities and treatments
  • Ability to communicate technical information and instructions to patients, families, and care delivery team members
  • Excellence in internal and external customer service
  • Ability to sustain alertness and concentration during computer/CRT work
  • Ability to regularly lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally assist with heavier tasks
  • Must demonstrate competencies specific to the patient population served
