About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform routine Respiratory Care procedures according to established standards in general patient care areas under direct supervision
  • Work under therapist supervision in adult critical care, pediatric and neonatal critical care, and emergency department settings
  • Direct and oversee assigned associates during advanced procedures such as mechanical ventilation
  • Assess patients’ respiratory status using chart/monitor review and physical assessment
  • Perform basic respiratory care procedures, including oxygen delivery and medication administration
  • Assemble equipment and check for and correct Respiratory Care equipment malfunctions
  • Perform measurements/calculations and assist in determining mechanical ventilation parameters under LRT supervision
  • Perform emergency and acute Respiratory Care procedures under LRT supervision
  • Communicate appropriately with healthcare team members regarding patient care
  • Communicate regularly with the shift charge therapist about area activity and availability to assist
  • Participate in department performance improvement activities
  • Assume responsibility for professional development

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited program for Respiratory Care
  • Experience in an acute care setting preferred
  • Successful completion of Therapist Multiple-Choice Examination (TMC) within 90 days from date of graduation
  • Must acquire Licensure from the State of Michigan; Graduate Respiratory Therapist status maintained until State of Michigan License is granted
  • Current BLS certification
  • Satisfactory performance on the respiratory care medication competency test
  • Completion of respiratory department orientation requirements, including Hospital, Core, and Department-specific orientation
  • Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from various computer systems and equipment
  • Ability to communicate constantly and effectively verbally and in writing
  • Accurate recording of activities and treatments
  • Ability to communicate technical information and instructions to patients, families, and care delivery team members
  • Demonstrated excellence in internal and external customer service
  • Ability to lift bulky or moderately heavy weights up to 50 pounds and occasionally assist with heavier tasks
  • Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served
