About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide genetic counseling to individuals and families regarding genetic conditions and birth defects
  • Practice as part of a genetic service team
  • Assess the needs of patients, significant others, and family members
  • Provide genetic counseling services and evaluate educational needs
  • Develop and implement appropriate teaching strategies
  • Document care and teaching according to documentation guidelines and regulatory standards
  • Act as a consultant and resource to other healthcare team members
  • Communicate and collaborate with the healthcare team to ensure continuity of care and coordination of services
  • Make appropriate referrals and act as a patient or family advocate
  • Collect data and develop and analyze reports as requested
  • Obtain, review, and evaluate extended family history information
  • Research clinical issues and strategies using the scientific method
  • Participate in scholarly activities such as peer-reviewed publications, scientific presentations, and peer education
  • Participate in educational programs for healthcare professionals, educators, and the public
  • Contribute regularly to Genetics Department publications
  • Provide continuing care by telephone or other communication methods outside regular business hours or from an offsite location when required
  • Participate in safety initiatives and risk-mitigation measures
  • Complete position and unit safety-related competencies and requirements
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling
  • 2 years of experience
  • Board certified or board eligible by the American Board of Medical Genetics or the American Board of Genetics Counselors
  • Board certification/eligibility must be in good standing and valid in the state of Michigan
  • Genetic Counselor licensure in the State of Michigan required
  • Excellent written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Self-directed
  • Ability to make quality, independent decisions
  • Analytical and strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently under tight deadlines, high volumes, and multiple interruptions
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Ability to listen to others
  • Competency using a variety of computer hardware and software systems
