About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Initiate and administer respiratory care to patients with cardiopulmonary abnormalities and deficiencies
- Follow provider prescriptions, orders, protocols, and organizational policies
- Serve as a respiratory care resource to providers, nurses, and hospital team members
- Evaluate patients, blood gases, ventilator needs, and responses to therapy
- Communicate findings, recommendations, and therapy changes to providers and nursing staff
- Administer, assess, and titrate oxygen therapy
- Perform respiratory therapies, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and Code Blue life support
- Assist with tracheal intubation, bronchoscopies, intubations, and extubations
- Maintain artificial airways, including endotracheal and tracheostomy tubes
- Perform pulmonary function testing, EKGs, arterial blood gases, pulse oximetry, end-tidal CO2 monitoring, and transcutaneous oximetry
- Perform airway suctioning and respiratory sample collection
- Educate patients and families about respiratory therapy
- Assist with patient transport and ambulance transports within facilities
- Communicate patient diagnosis and therapy during shift reports
- Supervise and instruct Respiratory Care students and orient new personnel
- Maintain and clean respiratory equipment and supplies
- Participate in quality assurance, process improvement, and hospital-wide performance improvement initiatives
- Work according to patient census and department needs, including overtime or shift changes when necessary
Requirements
What you’ll need- Associate’s degree in Respiratory Therapy (AS) required; Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Current Respiratory Therapist license in the State of Michigan required
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials required within 1 year of hire for anyone hired after 2004
- Must attend AHA courses: BLS, ACLS, PALS and AAP-NRP
- BLS certification required within 3 months of hire
- ACLS, PALS and NRP site-specific certifications required within 1 year of hire
- For BLH and BSH: completion of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program (certificate, diploma, or AS degree) and 5 years of experience
- Ability to perform patient care duties involving standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, and assisting with moving patients
- Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations
- Ability to provide age-appropriate direct patient care competencies
- Participation in continuous education, mandatory in-services, and professional development
