About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Initiate and administer respiratory care to patients with cardiopulmonary abnormalities and deficiencies
- Follow provider prescriptions, orders, protocols, and established policies and procedures
- Serve as a respiratory-care resource for providers, nurses, and hospital team members
- Evaluate patients, blood gases, ventilator needs, and responses to therapy
- Recommend therapy changes based on patient evaluations and ABG results
- Administer, assess, and titrate oxygen therapy
- Perform respiratory therapies, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and Code Blue life support
- Assist with tracheal intubation and maintain artificial airways
- Use infant and pediatric resuscitation equipment in emergency situations
- Provide patient and family education
- Perform pulmonary function testing, EKGs, arterial blood gases, pulse oximetry, end-tidal CO2 monitoring, and transcutaneous oximetry
- Assist with bronchoscopies, intubations, extubations, suctioning, and sample collection
- Transport patients safely and assist with ambulance transports between facilities
- Communicate patient diagnoses and therapy during shift reports
- Accurately charge patients for therapies performed
- Supervise and instruct Respiratory Care students
- Maintain and clean respiratory equipment and supplies
- Orient and instruct new personnel, nursing staff, students, and respiratory personnel
- Participate in department and hospital-wide process improvement, quality assurance, and performance improvement initiatives
- Work under the general supervision of the Respiratory manager and/or Director
Requirements
What you’ll need- Associate’s degree in Respiratory Therapy (AS) required; Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Current Respiratory Therapist license in the State of Michigan required
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials required within 1 year of hire for anyone hired after 2004
- Must attend AHA courses: BLS, ACLS, PALS, and AAP-NRP, with BLS certification within 3 months of hire and site-specific ACLS, PALS, and NRP certifications within 1 year of hire
- Completion of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program (certificate, diploma, or AS degree)
- For BLH and BSH only: 5 years of experience
- Ability to provide age-specific patient care
- Ability to stand and walk frequently and lift light-weight objects up to 50 pounds
- Ability to assist with lifting and moving patients
- Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations
- Ability to operate and maintain respiratory care equipment
- Ability to work variable shifts and overtime when necessary
- Must complete required preceptor course when supervising Respiratory Care students
