About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Participate in developing the Coalition’s overarching strategic plan and coordinate campaign work with BDC priorities
  • Help articulate BDC’s legislative strategy with lobbying support, members, and stakeholders
  • Assist with developing the policy and legislative agenda for building decarbonization at local and state levels
  • Provide research, policy analysis, and technical assistance to Coalition members and stakeholders
  • Advocate for policy priorities with legislators, staff, the Governor’s Office, agencies, labor unions, environmental justice organizations, nonprofits, OEMs, and others
  • Develop educational materials for elected and appointed officials about sponsored and supported legislation
  • Build relationships with policymakers and communicate policy priorities and opportunities
  • Establish the Coalition as a go-to resource for policymakers on building decarbonization
  • Provide written and verbal testimony in Sacramento
  • Track legislation, monitor field developments and trends, and produce regular reports for the California Director
  • Convene NGOs, labor, industry leaders, equity groups, and others to address barriers and identify solutions
  • Lead development and facilitation of coalition spaces
  • Support fundraising, memberships, and strategic partnerships for state-based work
  • Partner with legal counsel on compliance with state and federal lobbying laws
  • Support communications strategy and thought-leadership content such as op-eds, blogs, and speaking roles

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Passion for building decarbonization and commitment to the Coalition’s mission
  • Passion for equity, bridge building, and creating high-road jobs
  • Strong advocacy skills, political sophistication, and policy analysis skills
  • Ability to work effectively and build consensus among diverse stakeholders
  • Outstanding leadership and relationship-building skills
  • 3+ years of experience advocating and developing policy
  • Understanding of building electrification, the power sector, and/or climate solutions preferred
  • Understanding of workforce development and labor relations preferred
  • Proven understanding of California’s public policymaking and legislative environments
  • Success influencing policy agendas and outcomes
  • Experience with diverse stakeholders with divergent viewpoints and agendas
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Outstanding writing and verbal communication skills
  • Strong public speaking and facilitation skills
  • Exceptional project management skills
  • High emotional intelligence
  • Strong relationships in and around the California Legislature
  • Strong preference for a track record of developing, leading, and passing successful legislative efforts in the California Legislature
  • Experience with compliance with California’s legislative lobbying rules preferred
  • Ability and willingness to travel occasionally
  • Must be based in the San Francisco Bay Area; Sacramento preferred
