About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide social-service needs assessments
  • Oversee client service planning and implementation, and case management functions
  • Advocate for clients to secure benefits, entitlements, and services from social and governmental agencies
  • Develop referral resources and provide appropriate referrals related to legal cases
  • Maintain liaisons with referral resources, service providers, community agencies, and public and private institutions
  • Help clients identify medical, mental-health, and other social-service needs
  • Prepare clients to engage in services and advocate effectively on their own behalf
  • Provide supportive counseling, crisis intervention, education, and emergency safety planning
  • Confer with attorneys and clients on social-work advocacy relevant to legal matters
  • Accompany vulnerable clients to court, administrative-agency appointments, and community organizations
  • Develop and participate in community outreach, education, and training, including occasional evenings and weekends
  • Prepare reports, proposals, letters, forms, and other work-related documents
  • Request documents and secure services for clients
  • Attend meetings and complete administrative tasks, including timekeeping and case notes
  • Provide feedback, mentorship, and presentations on best practices as an emerging team leader
  • Maintain case data and collaborate on grant and contract narrative reports

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Master’s degree in social work, Counseling or related field preferred
  • New York State Certification in social work or licensed social worker preferred
  • Preferred minimum 3 years’ working with clients who have emergency housing issues, loss of employment, physical impairment/disability, mental illness, intimate partner violence, and substance abuse
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with diverse individuals, local organizations, and people in crisis
  • Ability to interact with clients/tenants of different races, ethnicities, ages, and sexual orientations in a multicultural environment
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Ability to write memoranda, correspondence, and other documentation with minimal errors
  • Excellent advocacy skills in English
  • Ability to work independently, manage a high caseload, track case data, meet deadlines, and remain flexible
  • Computer proficiency to review and generate case notes and reports independently
  • Ability to maintain up-to-date client information in a case management system
  • Ability to collaborate on narrative reports for grants and contracts
  • Basic knowledge of New York City and State housing laws and rules
  • Knowledge of government benefits eligibility and processes
