About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Design, refine, and iterate prompts for generative AI models and LLMs
- Test prompt variations and analyze results to drive continuous improvement
- Collaborate with multiple groups to integrate prompts and streamline manual processes
- Research advancements in LLMs, generative AI, and prompt engineering
- Provide input on model fine-tuning and Retrieval Augmented Generation strategies
- Debug unexpected model behaviors and identify root causes in prompt structure, model limitations, or data context
- Develop innovative software solutions within a geographically dispersed team
- Support Agile software development and short-sprint software deployment for CBP and DHS missions
Requirements
What you’ll need- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Ability to pass CBP background investigation, including a 3-year check for felony convictions, 1-year check for illegal drug use, and 1-year check for misconduct such as theft or fraud
- Must be available to work onsite in Ashburn, VA and/or Washington, D.C.
- 1–3 years of professional software development experience, internships, or relevant academic project work
- 1+ year of hands-on experience with Large Language Models or other generative AI models
- Experience with at least one programming language: Python or JavaScript/TypeScript
- Familiarity with prompt engineering techniques, including few-shot, chain-of-thought, structured outputs, and function calling
- Exposure to RAG concepts, including embeddings and vector databases
- Understanding of AI safety considerations, including prompt injection, bias, and data privacy
- Exposure to Agile/Scrum development environments
