About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide specialist legal advice and manage property law disputes across the Trust’s operational property portfolio
- Deliver pragmatic, risk-based solutions and protect the Trust’s interests
- Conduct property law disputes with adjoining landowners, occupiers and other third parties under supervision by the Senior Litigation Lawyer
- Advise on the Trust’s rights and duties regarding land under historic waterway enabling legislation
- Advise on enforcement of the Trust’s modern statutory powers
- Liaise with external solicitors to facilitate effective and efficient conduct of externally handled property litigation matters
- Draft letters before action, claims, witness statements, applications and other court documents
- Compile court bundles for issue at court and service on defendants under supervision by the Senior Litigation Lawyer
- Work with the Trust’s Claims Handler on property law claims for third-party loss
- Collaborate with colleagues, external advisers and third parties to provide commercially focused solutions
Requirements
What you’ll need- Qualified lawyer (or equivalent) with a minimum of 5 years’ property litigation law experience gained in private practice or in-house
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Track record of providing proactive, expert and timely legal advice
- Ability to build collaborative relationships across all levels and disciplines within the Trust and with external legal advisers
- Ability to participate effectively in meetings
- Compliance with Canal & River Trust Health & Safety policy and defined standards
- Ability to assess risks and adjust work methods where appropriate
- Ability to ensure equipment is appropriate for the task
- Awareness of safeguarding responsibilities and commitment to safe environments and practices protecting children, young people and adults at risk
