About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide senior-level strategic and operational advice on all environmental law matters to the Trust, including the Executive and Board
  • Advise on critical water resources, flood management, reservoirs, environmental designations and habitats, waste and permitting
  • Advise Senior Managers and the Executive on developing areas of environmental law, including climate change
  • Lead and coordinate legal responses to serious environmental incidents, investigations and statutory reporting obligations
  • Advise on water industry regulation relating to the Trust’s commercial water development activity
  • Provide legal advice on interactions with environmental regulators, water industry regulators and key stakeholders
  • Lead environmental litigation taken by or against the Trust, including abstraction licence appeals, judicial review, civil litigation and regulatory enforcement action
  • Supervise the Principal Environmental Lawyer
  • Work closely with the Senior Regulatory Lawyer
  • Coordinate external legal support, including Counsel

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Qualified lawyer (10 years+ PQE) or similar experience in environmental law (private practice and/or in-house)
  • Strong expertise across environmental compliance, regulation and litigation
  • Proven track record of providing strategic, proactive, expert and timely legal advice
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to give pragmatic advice and solve problems to meet the needs of the Trust
  • Ability to manage risk and influence stakeholders
  • Ability to build effective relationships with regulators, external advisers and colleagues at all levels
  • Ability to lead by example and ensure responsibility for safety
  • Compliance with Canal & River Trust’s Health & Safety policy and defined standards
  • Ability to investigate and report incidents, accidents and near misses
  • Ability to ensure safe use of appropriate equipment and prepare Risk Assessments and Method Statements
  • Planning law experience beneficial but not necessary
