About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Own key architectural decisions for Canva’s hybrid mobile platform across React Native, iOS, and Android
- Determine what should be shared, what should remain native, and how platform layers work together
- Turn the architecture into shipped production code with foundations for performance, reliability, and observability
- Deliver a React Native product surface in production within six months
- Establish stable capabilities and platform primitives for feature teams
- Lead Staff and Senior engineers through the mobile architecture migration
- Work with major product teams to drive platform adoption and establish trusted engineering patterns
- Influence mobile architecture decisions across 800+ frontend engineers
- Shape the foundations used by Canva product teams across web and mobile
Requirements
What you’ll need- Principal-level experience building or significantly evolving large-scale cross-platform mobile architecture in production
- Experience with React Native and React, or deep experience with Flutter, Kotlin Multiplatform, or another production-scale cross-platform stack
- Experience leading a meaningful migration of a mature mobile product while live and growing
- Principal-level technical leadership across multiple teams
- Organisation-wide architectural influence across multiple groups or a large engineering organisation
- Hands-on technical depth and implementation experience
- Strong engineering judgement and first-principles reasoning
- Deep knowledge of shared-code runtimes, native boundaries, bundle delivery, and performance profiling on real devices
- Deep fundamentals across iOS and Android
- Mobile performance, reliability, crash monitoring, and optimisation at scale
- Platform architecture, shared capabilities, libraries, abstractions, and infrastructure
- Strong fundamentals in data structures, complexity, and system-level trade-offs
- Nice to have: deep production experience with React Native and React internals
- Nice to have: Rust or C/C++
- Nice to have: open-source contributions to React Native, Flutter, Kotlin Multiplatform, Expo, or related ecosystems
- Nice to have: mobile CI/CD, release trains, and over-the-air updates at scale
- Nice to have: experience using AI tooling in engineering work
