About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Set the strategic direction for actuarial science, drive innovation, and produce key insights that drive company performance
  • Oversee pricing, forecasting, month-end close activities, performance monitoring, explanations, processes, assumptions, accruals, and evaluation of financial experience and trend drivers
  • Develop activities to improve efficiency and affordability
  • Lead a team of actuaries and ensure compliance with applicable Actuarial Standards of Practice
  • Support team training, personal development, and analyst mentorship programs
  • Develop strategy and guide teams in creating internal statistical models for bid pricing, financial projections, contract modeling, and ad hoc projects
  • Hold internal stakeholders accountable for actuarial function requests and key assumptions used across Finance and the organization
  • Identify and influence actuarial concepts and business drivers at Senior Management levels for interactions with federal and state regulators
  • Lead new business projects for the business development team at the Senior Management level when requested
  • Ensure integrity of federal and state rate filing requirements
  • Lead cross-functional opportunities where actuarial teams can drive corporate goals
  • Monitor and explain industry developments, including federal and state regulations and sub-regulatory guidance
  • Recommend and operationalize strategies affecting functional strategy achievement
  • Explain financial drivers for owned products and markets, including IBNR and other accruals
  • Engage with trade associations, regulators, and external stakeholders on policy and legislative matters
  • Provide actuarial expertise to business, government affairs, compliance, legal, and other teams on proposed policy, legislation, regulations, and guidance
  • Support organizational feedback, comments, and responses reflecting financial, operational, and actuarial considerations
  • Perform other job-related duties as requested

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree in actuarial science, mathematics, economics or a related field required
  • Ten (10) years of decision support, financial analysis, or actuarial experience preferred
  • Five (5) years of management experience preferred
  • Strong database (SAS or Access) experience preferred
  • Managed Care or healthcare experience preferred
  • Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) required
  • Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent listening and critical thinking skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and high level of professionalism
  • Ability to manage, develop, and motivate staff
  • Ability to interact with all levels of management as well as external stakeholders
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to effectively report data, analyze facts, and exercise sound business judgment when making recommendations
  • Ability to identify and analyze problems, draw conclusions, develop and lead processes, and communicate status and results
  • Expert proficiency with Microsoft Suite, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Advanced knowledge of SQL, SAS, R, or other data manipulation software preferred
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 15% occasionally
  • Ability to work in a general office environment and sit or stand for extended periods
