About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide basic technical clinical services and clerical support under the direction of licensed staff, physicians, or mid-level practitioners
- Provide basic clinical care and perform advanced technical skills for patients of all ages
- Collect patient assessment data including height, weight, vital signs, chief complaint/symptoms, and current medications
- Transport patients through the office
- Prepare patients for provider evaluation, including obtaining specimens, positioning for exams, listing medications, and assisting during exams and procedures
- Maintain exam, treatment, x-ray, lab, and work areas in a clean and safe manner; restock supplies and instruments; sterilize reusable equipment
- Document patient information, treatment procedures, medication refills, test results, and patient concerns in medical records
- Assist with lab procedures, including collecting urine specimens and preparing blood samples for reference labs
- Perform diagnostic tests including EKGs, audiograms, vision testing, and spirometry
- Assist with specialist referral authorizations and pre-authorizations for testing and ancillary services
- Greet patients and assist with check-in/check-out
- Update patient demographic information
- Answer phones, schedule appointments, and receive/relay messages
- Utilize automated computer systems, including electronic medical records
- Administer oral and parenteral medications after required education and competency validation under direct and immediate physician supervision
- Perform other assigned technical clinical and clerical duties for which training has been provided
Requirements
What you’ll need- High School Diploma or GED
- Medical Assistant Certification through a recognized national professional association such as the American Association of Medical Assistants, the American Medical Technologists, the National Association of Healthcare Professions, the American Registry of Medical Assistants, or the National Healthcare Association
- May be hired on a provisional status once the applicant receives the letter confirming they have taken the certification exam and have a provisional passing score
- AHA BLS-HCP required
- Effective communication and problem-solving skills
- Effective computer skills required for automated systems, including electronic medical records
- Must comply with all federal, state, and local agency requirements and standards, and Carilion and CMG policies, procedures, and standards
