About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide individual, group, and family counseling to help patients and families achieve treatment goals
  • Complete ongoing patient assessments and document impressions, recommendations, and progress toward treatment-plan goals
  • Facilitate assigned groups and ensure activities support each group’s goals or processes
  • Assist with assessments, admissions, and additional groups during low census as directed by the Program Manager
  • Use verbal redirection and other interventions before emergency measures for inappropriate acting-out behavior
  • Collaborate with treatment-team members, community providers, patients, and families to develop and implement individualized treatment plans
  • Participate in staffing meetings, community meetings, return-to-work meetings, discharge meetings, and employer staffing
  • Coordinate daily care and discharge planning with psychiatrists, Unit Counselors, community providers, patients, and family members
  • Begin discharge planning early and ensure plans are established before discharge
  • Keep patients and families informed of treatment and discharge plans when clinically appropriate
  • Advocate for patients and use creativity in discharge-plan implementation
  • Facilitate transitions between levels of care
  • Provide necessary information to providers at the next level of care
  • Document identified problems, discipline-specific interventions, discharge plans, and goals met

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Social Work, or Counseling
  • Master's Degree in Psychology, Social Work, or Counseling
  • Master's degree required within 6 months of hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days from the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Licensed Social Worker (LSW) within 2 years from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR), or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) within 2 years from IDFPR
  • 1 year of behavioral health experience
  • Ability to provide individual, group, and family counseling
  • Knowledge of group dynamics, cognitive behavior therapy, and brief therapies
  • Ability to complete timely, accurate, and succinct clinical documentation
  • Ability to assist with assessments, admissions, and group facilitation
  • Ability to use CPI methods when assisting with aggressive or violent patients
  • Knowledge and ability to work with co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse disorders
  • Ability to perform counselor duties as needed
  • Ability to collaborate with treatment teams and community providers
  • Ability to develop individualized treatment plans, referrals, and discharge plans
  • Ability to provide emergency assistance for inappropriate acting-out behavior
