About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Room patients and collect pertinent medical and personal history information
- Complete telephone communications with patients, families, pharmacies, and healthcare facilities
- Gather and maintain patient information according to department policies and procedures
- Perform patient check-in and check-out duties
- Obtain prior authorizations and verify insurance benefits
- Schedule appointments
- Coordinate referrals and diagnostic testing
- Perform office procedures according to department-specific competencies
- Conduct urine catheterizations and bladder scanning
- Remove sutures and staples
- Apply and remove casts under provider direction
- Read TB skin test results and refer positive screenings to nursing staff
- Perform point-of-care diagnostic testing
- Provide written instructions and condition-specific patient education materials
- Administer medications per provider orders
- Assist with prescription refills and call prescriptions into pharmacies
- Notify patients of prescription refills
- Document medication-related actions in the EMR
- Communicate lab results to patients by phone
- Order and maintain medical supplies
- Perform ear lavage procedures
- Assist medical and nursing staff with patient examination and treatment and help ensure smooth office operations
Requirements
What you’ll need- One of the listed medical assistant certifications: NRCMA, CCMA, RMA (AAH), RMA (ARMA), CMA (NCCT), CMA (AAMA), or RMA (AMT)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) within 30 days
- H.S. Diploma/GED
- Ability to perform routine administrative and patient care support duties
- Maintain competencies in point-of-care testing, equipment handling, and specialty training
