About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Perform patient care activities delegated by nurses and physicians for patients of all age groups with acute and chronic health problems
- Provide direct patient care encompassing nursing assistant duties, phlebotomy, 12-lead ECG tracings, and oxygen support
- Support the Emergency Department mission under RN supervision
- Participate in cost containment, maintaining a positive work environment, minimizing overtime, required classes and meetings, and unit committees
- Promote patient safety, infection control, and personal safety
- Maintain clean and stocked support areas and patient rooms
- Maintain and account for clinical equipment and complete equipment maintenance work orders
- Provide oxygen therapy, pulse oximetry, airway insertion, oral suctioning, and oxygen delivery by cannula or non-rebreather mask
- Insert Foley and straight catheters and perform catheter care
- Perform and document phlebotomy, 12-lead ECGs, laboratory testing, and bedside testing with quality control
- Provide care for patients requiring restraint or seclusion
- Apply splints at Methodist
- Measure and document vital signs, height, weight, intake/output, and pain ratings
- Perform special procedures and prepare rooms and equipment for trauma, sutures, moderate sedation, examinations, and other procedures
- Assist with patient admission, transport, discharge, mobility, transfers, positioning, nutrition, elimination, and specimen collection
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school diploma/GED
- Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days from the American Heart Association (AHA)
- Licensed Emergency Medical Technician (L-EMT) from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH)
- Knowledge and skills necessary to obtain adequate lab specimens for testing
- Working knowledge of equipment necessary to perform job functions
- Ability to perform phlebotomy and 12-lead ECG recording
- Ability to perform patient bedside lab testing and associated quality control
- Ability to use lift equipment safely
- Ability to perform patient moving and handling procedures
- Ability to work night shifts, every other weekend, and every other holiday
