About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform routine and complex blood drawing procedures, including venipuncture, finger and heel sticks, and blood cultures
  • Verify patient identification and specimen labeling
  • Respond to STAT and timed orders within required timeframes
  • Serve as part of trauma and code response teams
  • Collect blood specimens from newborn through geriatric patients in emergency, inpatient, and outpatient areas
  • Collect specialized specimens for commercial laboratories and research
  • Perform blood cultures using Chloroprep and various collection systems
  • Coordinate with nurses for port collections
  • Collect initial blood specimens for trauma patients
  • Participate in accreditation, proficiency testing, and annual competency testing
  • Maintain familiarity with and document review of laboratory and organizational policies and procedures
  • Communicate accurately, promptly, effectively, and professionally with internal and external customers

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)
  • Ability to perform venipuncture and skin puncture
  • Ability to perform routine and complex blood drawing procedures, including venipuncture, finger and heel sticks, and blood cultures
  • Ability to verify patient identification and specimen labeling using two identifiers
  • Ability to meet STAT response times within 15 minutes and TIMED test collection windows within 30 minutes
  • Ability to participate in trauma and code response teams
  • Ability to complete accreditation, proficiency testing, annual performance competencies, and re-education or re-training as needed
  • Familiarity with laboratory and organizational policies and procedures
  • Ability to complete required continuing education
  • Excellent communication and patient care skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work the required schedule, including one weekend every 3 weeks and one holiday per year
