About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Continuously observe, evaluate, and recall cardiac rhythms of telemetry patients
- Assess and accurately interpret cardiac rhythms
- Measure EKG intervals and recognize dysrhythmias or changes in EKG complexes promptly
- Monitor Q waves, ST segments, and QT intervals and note changes
- Respond to all monitoring outcomes and investigate interruptions in heart-rhythm reception
- Document EKG rhythm strips at the beginning of each shift and document rhythm or EKG-complex changes
- Give concise end-of-shift reports and EKG rhythm reports to the caring RN
- Report rhythm changes, EKG-complex changes, reception interruptions, and equipment failures
- Interact with physicians regarding inquiries
- Ensure proper function of monitoring equipment, maintain supplies, and troubleshoot equipment
- Use monitoring systems, individualize settings, maneuver video cameras for seizure patients, and enter monitoring changes in the computer
- Seek assistance from peers, Nurse Manager, or Biomedical Engineering for equipment concerns
- Track equipment use, report equipment needs, and restock supplies
- Participate in continuing education, required in-services, unit meetings, and peer information sharing
- Answer telephone lines, enter changes, and enter orders including labs and SPD supplies
- Assist with patients, peers, unit changes, department goals, quality assurance, and patient-care improvement
- Watch monitors, inform RNs of alarms, document telemetry readings in the EMR, answer phones, and print strips and documentation in Airstrips
Requirements
What you’ll need- Successfully completes certification EKG test and ongoing recertifications
- Attends required in-services
- Participates in unit meetings and in-services
- Maintains current knowledge of cardiac monitoring
- Knowledgeable about monitoring systems
- Able to use monitoring system functions and individualize settings to each patient's need
- Able to maneuver video camera to ensure adequate monitoring of seizure patients
- Uses troubleshooting techniques for monitoring equipment
- Computer entry for orders and monitoring changes
- Willingness to assist peers in assignment completion
- Maintains open communication
- Flexibility and adaptation to changing unit needs
