About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Travel to local skilled care facilities
- Perform routine and complex blood-drawing procedures, including venipuncture, finger and heel sticks, and blood cultures
- Verify patient identification and specimen labeling
- Perform point-of-care testing, specimen processing, and 12-lead EKGs in ambulatory settings
- Register patients and enter laboratory orders into Epic Prelude and the Epic computer system
- Collect blood specimens from newborn to geriatric patients in outpatient settings
- Provide collection containers and instructions to patients
- Process specimens according to test-specific requirements, including refrigeration, centrifugation, freezing, and other storage conditions
- Troubleshoot test-result and instrument-function problems or seek assistance from the Supervisor or Lead
- Participate in proficiency testing, accreditation activities, competencies, re-education, and re-training
- Follow laboratory and organizational policies and document required reviews
- Communicate accurately, promptly, effectively, and professionally with internal and external customers
- Serve regional skilled care facilities and Carle outpatient laboratories
Requirements
What you’ll need- Illinois driver's license
- Proof of auto insurance
- Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days from the American Heart Association
- H.S. Diploma/GED
- 6 months of phlebotomy work experience or completion of Carle Phlebotomy in Training Program
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to successfully complete accreditation, proficiency testing, and annual performance competencies
- Ability to complete required re-education or re-training
- Ability to follow laboratory and organizational policies and procedures
- Ability to complete continuing education as required
- Ability to work day shifts Monday–Friday and every other Saturday
- Availability for 1–2 on-call shifts per week
