About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Procure, identify, collect, label, transport and process clinical specimens
  • Perform venipuncture and micro-collection
  • Expedite STAT and high-priority specimens
  • Communicate patient concerns, delays and questions to nursing staff and other personnel
  • Perform glucose tolerance testing and outpatient EKG testing
  • Collect specimens from adult, geriatric, neonatal, child and adolescent patients
  • Process specimens for analysis, operate centrifuges and maintain specimen integrity
  • Sort, distribute, store and retrieve specimens according to protocol and priority
  • Enter specimen data, register patients and order or cancel tests in laboratory information systems
  • Monitor pending and uncollected specimens and follow up before the next shift
  • Provide phlebotomy services across Carle Health inpatient and outpatient locations
  • Maintain supplies and clean work areas; dispose of contaminated materials properly
  • Train new personnel or students and support section operations

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma/GED required
  • Perform phlebotomy within scope of practice
  • Follow Carle Health safety and HIPPA policies
  • Ability to collect blood, urine, stool, semen, swabs, specialty testing, send-out tests, pediatric draws, sputum and breath specimens
  • Ability to perform EKG testing in outpatient facilities
  • Ability to operate centrifuges and label printers
  • Computer operations and order entry using SPR, CLN, LIS and PCS
  • Ability to follow specimen collection, processing, storage and transport protocols
  • Ability to work night shift, 8:00pm–4:30am, various days
  • Weekend work every other weekend and alternating three holidays per year
