About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform routine and complex blood drawing procedures, including venipuncture, finger and heel sticks, and blood cultures
  • Verify patient identification and specimen labeling using two identifiers
  • Maintain response times for STAT tests within 15 minutes and TIMED tests within the required 30-minute window
  • Participate in trauma and code response teams
  • Collect initial blood specimens for trauma patients
  • Serve patients from newborn to geriatric in the Emergency Department and inpatient and outpatient hospital areas
  • Collect specialized specimens for commercial laboratories and research
  • Perform Chloroprep skin decontamination for blood cultures
  • Coordinate with nurses for port collections
  • Participate in accreditation, proficiency testing, re-education, retraining, and annual competencies
  • Review and document required policy and procedure documentation
  • Communicate accurately and professionally with internal and external customers

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)
  • 6 months phlebotomy experience
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days through the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Ability to perform venipuncture and skin puncture
  • Ability to perform finger and heel sticks, blood cultures, and complex blood drawing procedures
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to complete accreditation, proficiency testing, and annual performance competencies
  • Ability to follow laboratory and organizational policies and procedures
  • Ability to complete required continuing education
  • Excellent communication and patient care skills
