About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Procure clinical specimens through collection, transportation, ordering, labeling, and processing
  • Identify patients using proper procedures before specimen collection
  • Collect specimens accurately and promptly through venipuncture and micro-collection
  • Label specimens with patient information, initials, date, and time
  • Expedite STAT and other highest-priority specimens
  • Communicate patient concerns, collection delays, and testing questions to nursing staff and other personnel
  • Process and prepare specimens for analysis while ensuring specimen integrity
  • Operate centrifuges and sort specimens by testing site/analyzer
  • Store and retrieve specimens according to protocol
  • Enter collected specimen data and orders into laboratory information systems
  • Monitor pending and uncollected specimens and follow up before the next shift
  • Register patients and order, add, or cancel tests in LIS/PCS
  • Perform EKG testing in outpatient facilities
  • Provide phlebotomy services at inpatient and outpatient Carle Health locations
  • Train new personnel or students and support section operations
  • Monitor and restock consumable inventory
  • Maintain clean work areas and properly dispose of contaminated materials

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)
  • Perform venipuncture and micro-collection
  • Familiarity with test catalogue and specimen requirements
  • Ability to collect blood, urine, stool, semen, swabs, specialty testing, send-out tests, pediatric draws, sputum, and breath test specimens
  • Ability to perform EKG testing according to standards
  • Knowledge of specimen labeling, processing, storage, transport, and priority handling protocols
  • Ability to operate centrifuges and troubleshoot label printers and processing equipment
  • Computer order entry and registration proficiency in LIS/PCS, SPR, and CLN
  • Knowledge of Add-On and test cancellation protocols
  • Ability to follow Carle Health safety and HIPPA policies
  • Ability to work evening shifts, alternating weekends, and alternating holidays; on-call requirement 1200-2030
