About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Work at the unit level with bedside staff and unit leaders to deliver effective, efficient, high-quality care
  • Continuously evaluate bedside care, identify process gaps, and facilitate process improvement activities
  • Implement evidence-based research and practice recommendations
  • Use unit dashboard metrics and quality metrics such as NDNQI and VON to prioritize and drive practice changes
  • Collaborate with unit managers, supervisors, bedside staff, healthcare providers, quality outcomes coordinators, and quality departments on patient care issues
  • Participate in work groups and safety initiatives addressing unit-wide and hospital-wide patient care issues
  • Collect data and evaluate trends in patient outcomes, nurse-sensitive indicators, core measures, VBP metrics, and occurrence reporting
  • Review staff compliance with regulatory agency requirements related to patient safety
  • Write and revise unit-based policies, procedures, and standards based on current evidence
  • Track and report quality outcomes and unit trends to management, physician teams, and bedside nurses
  • Provide real-time accountability, coaching, and education to promote safe practice ownership
  • Use performance improvement methodologies such as PDSA to implement change
  • Participate in daily WB rounds and evaluate adherence to current practices and policies
  • Evaluate the necessity of urinary catheters, telemetry, and central lines with bedside nurses and providers
  • Review enterprise reports, track trends, and facilitate process improvement teams
  • Review hospital-acquired conditions, identify trends, and facilitate risk-reduction efforts
  • Proactively round on high-risk patients and assess appropriateness of care
  • Conduct daily rounds addressing falls, invasive lines, telemetry, documentation, restraints, pressure injuries, and patient and environmental safety
  • Assess appropriate use of bedside and video remote sitters
  • Provide quality reports to unit leaders and bedside nursing staff on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly basis
  • Collaborate with unit leadership and the unit educator on continuing education needs assessments

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks/projects while meeting organizational standards
  • National Nursing Certification within 2 years (varies)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days – American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Licensed Registered Professional Nurse (RN) – Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR)
  • IHI Open School Basic Certificate in Quality and Safety within 1 year – Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI)
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Nursing work experience
  • Complete the equivalent required direct patient care hours per week according to FTE status
  • Day shift, Monday–Friday with flexibility to support night shift
  • No weekend, holiday, or on-call requirements
