About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Function as an integral part of the perioperative team and assist the surgeon
- Function as first or second surgical technician or second circulator under direct RN supervision
- Apply aseptic principles to maintain a sterile environment during surgical setup and procedures
- Assist with organization and coordination of supplies and equipment
- Initiate appropriate intraoperative first-assisting behavior
- Maintain a safe environment for patients, coworkers, and self
- Apply knowledge of normal and pathologic anatomy and physiology
- Perform scrubbing duties and teach scrubbing classes to medical students, residents, and other students
- Perform preceptor duties
- Charge for equipment and supplies
- Assist nurses in planning patient care
- Operate autoclave sterilization units
- Assist with room turnover
- Assist with patient positioning, suctioning, tying, camera holding, retracting, and closure of all skin layers
Requirements
What you’ll need- Associate's Degree in Surgical Technology, Certificate of Completion in Surgical Technology, or experience in lieu of education
- Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days – American Heart Association (AHA)
- Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) – National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA), or Licensed Surgical Assistant within 1 year – Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR), or Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) within 1 year – National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
- 2+ years of operating room scrub experience
- Knowledge of asepsis, anatomy and physiology, closure techniques, and surgical assisting
- Ability to perform scrubbing duties, operate autoclave sterilization units, and assist with surgical equipment and supplies
- Ability to provide age-specific care to obstetrical patients
- Ability to comply with hospital safety, legal, and departmental policies and procedures
