About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide surgical technology for direct and indirect patient care and service
  • Assist surgeons during operative and invasive procedures
  • Prepare surgeon-specific operative and invasive procedures with timely, accurate, effective, and efficient instruments, equipment, and sutures
  • Set up sterile fields, back tables, mayo stands, and appropriate available items before patients enter the room
  • Scrub on simple to complex procedures across a variety of specialties
  • Run the mayo independently and adapt to surgeon techniques and preferences
  • Perform first scrub, first assist, and second scrub roles
  • Perform case closing activities, including dressing application, transfer, and turnover
  • Anticipate and provide for expected and unexpected intra-operative events and case changes
  • Observe induction and maintain a quiet environment
  • Protect patient privacy
  • Precept and mentor surgical technologists, RNs, staff, and students
  • Teach RNs to scrub on a variety of cases
  • Serve as a resource of knowledge and share knowledge with others
  • Perform timely counts in collaboration with the circulating RN
  • Communicate urgent and routine needs appropriately
  • Contribute to unit operations, goals, and objectives
  • Assist others and remain flexible regarding assigned areas
  • Resolve conflicts constructively
  • Ensure instruments, specialty cards, and equipment are available for cases
  • Participate in quality improvement efforts
  • Participate in assigned on-call hours, including after-hours, weekends, and holidays

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days from the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Certificate of Completion in Surgical Technology or College Diploma in Surgical Technology
  • Ability to work day shifts: 4,10s Monday-Friday 7:00am-5:30pm, with some 6:30am case starts, or 5,8s
  • Weekend on-call rotation
  • Holiday on-call rotation
  • Rotating weeknight, weekend, and holiday call
  • Ability to respond within the department-defined timeframe when called while on-call
  • Ability to adhere to assigned weekly, weekend, and holiday call shifts
  • Ability to scrub simple to complex procedures across a variety of specialties
  • Ability to perform first scrub, first assist, and second scrub roles
  • Ability to run the mayo independently
  • Ability to anticipate and respond to routine, emergency, and unexpected intra-operative needs
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with surgeons, RNs, technologists, staff, and students
  • Ability to participate in quality improvement efforts
