About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Conduct initial intakes and in-depth evaluations of eligibility for immigration benefits or relief from removal
- Provide accurate legal advice and Know Your Rights information
- Prepare written evaluation memos and consult with supervising and managing attorneys on legal theory and case strategy
- Provide direct representation before USCIS, EOIR, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and New York State courts
- Represent clients in matters including SIJS, asylum, U and T visas, VAWA, TPS, family-based petitions, adjustment of status, inadmissibility waivers, cancellation of removal, prosecutorial discretion, and related proceedings
- Maintain an internal caseload based on funder contractual obligations
- Maintain relationships with funders, social and legal service providers, USCIS, EOIR, and DHS
- Comply with reporting requirements, maintain case dashboards and notes, and report to partners and stakeholders
- Maintain electronic LawLogix files and physical case files
- Train, mentor, and supervise legal interns, fellows, and volunteers
- Provide in-house and outreach trainings, presentations, and workshops
- Travel to courts, meetings, trainings, and offsite work locations
Requirements
What you’ll need- Juris Doctor required
- Admission to NY Bar; attorneys working toward admission to the NY Bar will be considered
- Experience in family and/or immigration law, including clinical or pro bono experience, preferred
- Fluency in English and Spanish or another language strongly preferred
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills, maturity, and ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Excellent organizational, project management, and computer skills
- Demonstrated commitment to public interest law, particularly children’s issues and/or immigration
- Experience supervising paralegals or other staff
- Ability to travel throughout the five boroughs, the Archdiocese, and Long Island
- Willingness to travel to all five boroughs
- Ability to work additional evening/weekend hours when required by court or program deadlines or client needs
