About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide accurate ASL-to-English and English-to-ASL interpretation for one-on-one interactions, group settings, and virtual or in-person meetings
- Facilitate communication in education, healthcare, legal proceedings, community services, and other settings
- Use Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) and other technologies for remote interpretation services
- Maintain confidentiality and follow the RID Code of Professional Conduct
- Collaborate with Deaf individuals, colleagues, and organizational personnel
- Perform other language support tasks as assigned
- Report to the Deputy Program Manager
Requirements
What you’ll need- Minimum 5+ years of professional ASL interpreting experience in one or more relevant fields
- Bachelor’s Degree in American Sign Language (ASL), Linguistics, Deaf Studies, or a related field is strongly preferred
- Must hold one or more of: Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification, Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) certification, Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) certification, or equivalent
- Fluency in ASL and English
- Exceptional comprehension, vocabulary, and cultural awareness
- Thorough understanding of Deaf culture
- Ability to manage complex or sensitive communication exchanges with professionalism, discretion, and empathy
- Physical stamina and mental focus for extended interpreting sessions
- Familiarity with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or VRI tools
- Must pass a background check and additional client or project-specific screenings
- Travel availability for on-site assignments when needed
- Ability to be on-call
- Ability to use computers and office productivity tools
- Ability to establish a productive and professional workspace
- Ability to sit or stand for long periods while looking at a computer screen
