About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide accurate ASL-to-English and English-to-ASL interpretation
  • Interpret one-on-one interactions, group settings, and virtual or in-person meetings
  • Facilitate communication in education, healthcare, legal proceedings, and community services
  • Use Video Remote Interpreting and other technologies for remote interpretation services
  • Maintain confidentiality and follow the RID Code of Professional Conduct
  • Collaborate with Deaf individuals, colleagues, and organizational personnel
  • Perform other language support tasks as assigned
  • Remain on-call and receive notification within 48 hours of potential jobs
  • Work extended periods and potentially flexible, holiday, or outside-normal-business hours

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Minimum 3 years of professional ASL interpreting experience in one or more relevant fields
  • Must hold RID certification or Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) certification, or equivalent
  • Fluency in ASL and English
  • Exceptional comprehension, vocabulary, and cultural awareness
  • Thorough understanding of Deaf culture
  • Ability to manage complex or sensitive communication exchanges professionally, discreetly, and empathetically
  • Physical stamina and mental focus for extended interpreting sessions
  • Familiarity with virtual interpreting platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or VRI tools
  • Must pass a background check and additional client or project-specific screenings as required
  • Travel availability for on-site assignments when needed
  • Ability to establish a productive and professional workspace
  • Ability to use computers and office productivity tools with sufficient speed
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods while looking at a computer screen
  • Bachelor's degree in ASL, Linguistics, Deaf Studies, or a related field is strongly preferred
  • Experience in high-profile or specialized fields is desired
  • Knowledge of tactile interpreting is desired
  • Additional spoken-language fluency is desired
  • BEI certification with a minimum score of 3 is desired
