About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Accurately interpret spoken communication between parties in real time while preserving meaning, intent, and tone
  • Provide consecutive and simultaneous interpretation as required
  • Interpret onsite as needed by courts, including hearings, pretrials, probation hearings, sentencing, jail visits, forensic interviews, immigration, and human trafficking matters
  • Interpret during court hearings, trials, depositions, arraignments, conferences, and other legal proceedings
  • Facilitate cross-cultural understanding by clarifying non-verbal cues and culture-specific concepts
  • Maintain confidentiality and impartiality in accordance with regulations and ethical standards
  • Complete required documentation, logs, and reports
  • Comply with federal, state, and local laws, government customer policies, and professional conduct codes
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Report to the Deputy Program Manager

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 3+ years of court interpretation, immigration, trafficking, or hearings experience
  • Native or near-native fluency in English and one specified Cantonese dialect: Guangfu, Guangxi, Siyi, Gao-Young, Yonh-Xun, Gou-Lou, Qin-Lian, or Zhongshan
  • Familiarity with legal terminology
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and act impartially
  • Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and on a multifunctional team
  • Ability to quickly and accurately relay spoken information
  • Ability to be on call and respond to potential jobs within 48 hours
  • Ability to travel to different locations for in-person interpretation
  • Ability to use computers and office productivity tools
  • Ability to sit for long periods and perform duties for extended periods
  • Court certification in Boston, Massachusetts is preferred, not required
