About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide accurate, real-time interpretation between parties who do not share a common language
  • Interpret consecutively and/or simultaneously as required
  • Provide onsite interpretation for court hearings, pretrials, probation hearings, sentencing, jail visits, forensic interviews, immigration, and human trafficking matters
  • Interpret during trials, depositions, arraignments, conferences, and other legal proceedings
  • Preserve meaning, intent, and tone when interpreting spoken communication
  • Clarify non-verbal cues and culture-specific concepts to facilitate cross-cultural understanding
  • Maintain confidentiality and impartiality in accordance with regulations and ethical standards
  • Complete required documentation, logs, and reports
  • Comply with applicable laws, government customer policies, and professional conduct codes
  • Report to the Deputy Program Manager
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree preferred)
  • 3+ years of court interpretation, immigration, trafficking, or hearings experience
  • Native or near-native fluency in English and one Indigenous Mexican language: Nahuatl, Yucatec Maya, Tzeltal, Tzotzil, Mixtec, Zapotec, or Otomi
  • Familiarity with legal terminology
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and act impartially
  • Court certification in Boston, Massachusetts preferred
  • Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills
  • Ability to work independently and on a multifunctional team
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately
  • Ability to quickly and accurately relay spoken information
  • Ability to use computers and office productivity tools
  • Ability to establish a productive and professional workspace
  • Ability to work extended periods and sit for long periods while looking at a computer screen
  • Ability to be on call and receive notification within 48 hours of potential jobs
  • Ability to travel to different locations to interpret in person
  • Ability to work flexible and nonstandard hours as mission needs require
