About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide accurate, impartial, consecutive, and simultaneous interpretation between parties in legal and other settings
- Interpret during court hearings, pretrials, probation hearings, sentencing, jail visits, forensic interviews, immigration, human trafficking matters, trials, depositions, arraignments, conferences, and other legal proceedings
- Facilitate cross-cultural understanding by clarifying non-verbal cues and culture-specific concepts
- Preserve the meaning, intent, and tone of spoken communication
- Maintain strict confidentiality and impartiality
- Complete required documentation, logs, and reports
- Comply with applicable laws, government customer policies, and professional conduct codes
- Report to the Deputy Program Manager
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school diploma or equivalent
- 3+ years of court interpretation, immigration, trafficking, or hearings experience
- Native or near-native fluency in English and one Indigenous Mexican language: Nahuatl, Yucatec Maya, Tzeltal, Tzotzil, Mixtec, Zapotec, or Otomi
- Familiarity with legal terminology
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and impartiality
- Court certification in Boston, Massachusetts preferred
- Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and on a multifunctional team
- Ability to accurately relay spoken information
- Ability to work onsite and travel to different locations for in-person interpretation
- Ability to be on call and receive notification within 48 hours of potential jobs
- Ability to use computers and office productivity tools
- Ability to sit for long periods and perform duties for extended periods
- Ability to work flexible and nonstandard hours as needed
