About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Accurately interpret spoken communication between parties in real time
- Preserve the meaning, intent, and tone of interpreted messages
- Clarify non-verbal cues and culture-specific concepts to facilitate cross-cultural understanding
- Maintain confidentiality and impartiality in accordance with regulations and ethical standards
- Complete required documentation, logs, and reports
- Comply with federal, state, and local laws, government customer policies, and professional conduct codes
- Provide interpretation services in a variety of settings, including in-person locations
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Report to the Deputy Program Manager
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school diploma or equivalent
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Native or near-native fluency in English and one or more specified target languages: Arabic, Cantonese, Dari/Pashto, Farsi, German, Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Tigrinya, or Vietnamese
- Proven experience providing interpretation services, preferably in a government or public sector environment
- Familiarity with specialized legal, medical, technical, or military terminology as required
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and act impartially
- Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, multitasking, and attention-to-detail skills
- Ability to work independently and on a multifunctional team
- Ability to relay spoken information quickly and accurately
- Must be able to be on call and receive notification within 48 hours of potential jobs
- Must be able to travel to different locations for in-person interpretation
- Ability to use computers and office productivity tools
- Ability to sit for long periods and perform duties for extended periods
- Ability to work flexible and nonstandard hours
- Certification from a recognized interpreting body preferred, if applicable
