About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide accurate, impartial consecutive and simultaneous interpretation between parties in real time
- Interpret during court hearings, trials, depositions, arraignments, conferences, pretrials, probation hearings, sentencing, jail visits, forensic interviews, immigration, and human trafficking matters
- Facilitate cross-cultural understanding by clarifying non-verbal cues and culture-specific concepts when necessary
- Preserve meaning, intent, and tone during interpretation
- Maintain strict confidentiality and impartiality in accordance with regulations and ethical standards
- Complete required documentation, logs, and reports
- Comply with federal, state, and local laws, government customer policies, and professional conduct codes
- Work onsite as needed by the courts and travel to different locations for in-person assignments
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree preferred)
- 3+ years of court interpretation, immigration, trafficking, hearings
- Native or near-native fluency in both English and one of these languages: Atlantic, Mande, Kwa, Volta-Niger, Hausa, Yotuba, Igobo, Akan, Wolof, and Fula
- Familiarity with legal terminology
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and act impartially
- Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with high-level attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and on a multi-functional team
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately
- Ability to quickly and accurately relay spoken information
- Court certification in Boston, Massachusetts preferred
- Must be able to be on call and travel to different locations for in-person interpretation
- Must be physically and mentally able to perform duties for extended periods
- Ability to use a computer and office productivity tools
- Ability to establish a productive and professional workspace
- Must be able to sit for long periods while looking at a computer screen
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including holidays, after-hours, and weekends as needed
