About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide accurate, real-time spoken interpretation while preserving meaning, intent, and tone
  • Interpret consecutively and/or simultaneously as required
  • Provide interpretation for court hearings, trials, depositions, arraignments, conferences, pretrials, probation hearings, sentencing, jail visits, forensic interviews, immigration, and human trafficking matters
  • Facilitate cross-cultural understanding by clarifying non-verbal cues and culture-specific concepts
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and impartiality
  • Complete required documentation, logs, and reports according to agency and contract protocols
  • Comply with federal, state, and local laws, government customer policies, and professional conduct codes
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Report to the Deputy Program Manager
  • Work onsite as needed by the courts and travel to different locations for in-person interpretation

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree preferred)
  • 3+ years of court interpretation, immigration, trafficking, or hearings experience
  • Native or near-native fluency in English and one specified West African language/dialect: Atlantic, Mande, Kwa, Volta-Niger, Hausa, Yotuba, Igbo, Akan, Wolof, or Fula
  • Familiarity with legal terminology
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and impartiality
  • Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • High-level attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and on a multifunctional team
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly and accurately relay spoken information
  • Ability to be on call and receive notification within 48 hours of potential jobs
  • Ability to travel to different locations for in-person interpretation
  • Ability to use computers and office productivity tools sufficiently
  • Ability to establish a productive and professional workspace
  • Ability to sit for long periods while looking at a computer screen
  • Court certification in Boston, Massachusetts is preferred
