About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Interpret and transliterate information while conveying the thought, intent and intended spirit of messages
- Convey messages clearly and accurately according to the consumer’s preferred language modality
- Promote appropriate use of interpreters in educational settings and other service venues
- Provide interpreting/transliterating services in classrooms, parent-teacher meetings, IEP meetings, after-school activities, graduations, concerts, theater performances, administrative meetings and trainings
- Coordinate with school staff regarding lighting, viewing angle, distance and closed captions
- Review assignment materials and acquire specific vocabulary needed for interpretation/transliteration
- Participate in skill development and professional growth activities
- Provide support/tutoring to deaf or hard-of-hearing students to facilitate communication and reinforce classroom objectives
- Respond to inquiries from administrators, teachers and staff
- Follow division, department and school policies and procedures and maintain confidentiality
- Provide periodic reports as requested by the supervisor
- Utilize a personal computer and general office equipment
- Perform other assigned duties
Requirements
What you’ll need- Considerable knowledge of deafness, including language and culture
- Knowledge of interpretation and transliteration methodologies and practices
- Knowledge of related state and federal guidelines and the RID Code of Professional Conduct
- Fluent in English and American Sign Language
- Ability to interpret or transliterate simultaneously voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice quickly, accurately and understandably
- Ability to determine specific communicative needs of consumers
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing
- Ability to develop positive and effective working relationships with students, teachers, staff, parents and the public
- Ability to work independently and prioritize work schedules
- Valid Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level II; or passing EIPA Written Test with minimum Level 3.0 EIPA Performance Test or equivalent from another state
- Interpreters hired with VQAS Level II or EIPA Level 3.0 must reach VDOE qualifications within two years of hire
- FBI Criminal History Investigation
- State Police Criminal History Investigation
- Child Protective Services Investigation
- Tuberculosis Screening/Test
- Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
