About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Conduct and support policy and legal research and analysis for US Program outputs and advocacy
  • Draft formal reports, articles, briefs, and advocacy products
  • Advocate to and educate the US government, including the executive branch and Congress, regarding civilian protection and security cooperation
  • Lead, coordinate, and/or support civil society coalitions
  • Conduct policy and legal review of CIVIC US and coalition products
  • Analyze legal texts, policy documents, and relevant norms
  • Arrange and participate in meetings and events with government officials, Congressional staff, and others
  • Prepare the US Director for meetings and events
  • Represent CIVIC and the US Program in public and private forums, public events, and media engagements
  • Coordinate social and traditional media strategy, content, and dissemination plans with the Communications team
  • Develop and maintain working-level contacts in government and other organizations
  • Attend external coalition and campaign meetings and internal meetings on behalf of the US Program
  • Track US policy developments in select conflict-affected countries
  • Coordinate meetings with officials on behalf of other CIVIC programs
  • Build CIVIC staff capacity to implement best practices
  • Assist with program management, monitoring, evaluation, learning, monthly reporting, fundraising, and grant writing
  • Report to the US Director
  • Travel approximately 5–10% as opportunities arise

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • MA/MS or JD degree or equivalent in law, international affairs, human rights, public policy, security studies, or related fields (JD preferred)
  • At least 5 years of relevant work experience in policy advocacy, human rights, humanitarian affairs, foreign policy, protection of civilians, or related areas
  • Demonstrated knowledge, expertise, and experience with US foreign and national security policy and law, human rights, civilian protection, and/or international law
  • Demonstrated knowledge, expertise, and experience with US government policy advocacy, including familiarity with advocacy tools/approaches and experience engaging with US government officials
  • Experience and familiarity with the civil society landscape engaging in advocacy on US foreign policy
  • High standard of professional ethics and integrity
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ability to collaborate and communicate openly across teams
  • Ability to introduce new ways of thinking and doing business into an organization
  • Understanding of program lifecycle and optimal points to provide advice and support
  • Demonstrated experience or formal education in one or more qualitative research methods
  • Ability to write in a clear, concise, and well-organized manner
  • Attention to detail, flexibility, resourcefulness, and creative problem-solving skills
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs, especially Word and Excel
  • Valid authorization to work in the United States without the need for current or future visa sponsorship
  • Proficiency in Spanish, French, or Arabic would be an asset
