About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Evaluate patients’ insurance status and assist with ensuring coverage eligibility for timely and efficient billing
  • Access partner hospital electronic health records to verify insurance eligibility and monitor account updates
  • Place appropriate insurance or eligible charity care programs to ensure timely filing
  • Validate and accurately document demographic and insurance information
  • Contact guarantors to obtain information and communicate with partner hospitals
  • Monitor accounts for documentation, insurance verifications, and collection of deposits and self-pay balances
  • Support and serve as a resource to associates, including cross-covering Family Financial Advocate functions
  • Provide cost estimates to patients and providers and approve discounts according to organizational and government policies
  • Perform financial assessments of uninsured and underinsured patients and assist with federal, state, and local program applications
  • Ensure accounts are ready for billing with adequate supporting documentation within established time frames
  • Support patients and families in accessing private and governmental funding sources
  • Conduct financial interviews and ensure compliance with hospital financial resolution policies
  • Resolve financial-services concerns and advise patients and guarantors regarding payment rights, responsibilities, and procedures
  • Create patient responsibility estimates and collect applicable patient responsibility portions
  • Handle inbound and outbound customer service, account inquiry, coverage, and eligibility calls
  • Communicate with specialty clinic locations and physician offices
  • Support scheduling functions and other assigned projects and duties

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Associate’s Degree or equivalent of education, training, and experience required
  • Minimum (3) three years of hospital experience and working knowledge of patient accounting functions including pre-admissions and admission registration will be considered in lieu of an Associate Degree
  • Minimum (1) year of Family Financial Advocate experience, in addition to Registration, insurance, billing, and/or relevant experience required for FA I
  • Strong customer service, communication, and problem-solving skills required
  • Knowledge of healthcare insurance, reimbursement methodologies, and revenue cycle operations required
  • Experience working with electronic health record (EHR) systems and patient account management preferred
  • Associates may be required to be subject to background checks for partner hospitals to provide access to electronic health records
