About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Strategize, design, and execute GSD’s UAS programs and community-facing projects supporting local partners across the Caribbean, Central America, and South Pacific
- Deploy to post-disaster contexts to conduct flight operations, create actionable orthomosaic maps, and manage secure data transfers
- Manage international UAS registration, flight permitting, customs/import authorizations, and emergency fast-track procedures
- Design, update, and instruct culturally adaptable UAS training curricula for local partner organizations and regional first responders
- Deliver staff training, standardize flight procedures, and build internal operational competency
- Refine and enforce UAS flight manuals, risk assessments, pre/post-flight checklists, and emergency response procedures
- Coordinate project timelines, deliverables, basic budgets, and logistics for partner UAS engagements
- Ensure UAS operations follow “Do No Harm” principles, humanitarian data protection standards, and local privacy considerations
- Maintain, inventory, troubleshoot, and budget for GSD’s enterprise UAS fleet, platforms, and payloads
- Serve as GSD’s primary technical advisor for UAS decisions and resolve operational, technical, and logistical challenges
- Promote accountability, humility, integrity, responsible stewardship, and maximum benefit to disaster-impacted communities
- Travel domestically and internationally up to 50%
Requirements
What you’ll need- Three (3) or more years of hands-on experience operating uncrewed aerial systems
- Strong preference for field deployment in disaster response, humanitarian assistance, or resource-constrained international environments
- Proven track record of operating UAS, capturing high-resolution aerial imagery, and managing end-to-end orthomosaic processing
- Experience developing, delivering, and facilitating UAS training curricula for diverse, cross-cultural, and international partner teams
- Experience navigating international civil aviation regulatory frameworks, including import permits, flight authorizations, and emergency operational waivers
- Experience maintaining, inventorying, and troubleshooting field-ready UAS hardware, payloads, and ground control equipment
- Experience establishing operational SOPs, risk management protocols, and safety management systems
- Experience managing project workflows, field schedules, and operational logistics
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and training
- Active FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate or equivalent international civil aviation authority remote pilot credential; must be current
- Advanced technical command of automated mission planning software (e.g., DroneDeploy) and orthomosaic creation suites
- Knowledge of humanitarian protection principles, “Do No Harm” frameworks, and data privacy/ethics standards related to aerial surveillance and community imaging
- Ability to make rapid tactical and logistical decisions in unstable, offline, or resource-constrained settings
- Cross-cultural communication, facilitation, and teaching skills
- Working knowledge of international aviation regulations, TFRs, and disaster-response airspace coordination protocols
- Organizational and task-management skills, including basic budgeting, expense tracking, and collaboration software such as Excel and AirTable
- Alignment with humanitarian core values: accountability, humility, integrity, and local capacity-building
- Ability to obtain necessary travel documents, including an active passport, visas, and vaccinations as required
- Eligible to work in the United States; GSD is unable to provide sponsorship
- Ability to fulfill disaster-response deployment responsibilities in hazardous, dynamic, and unstable environments
- Ability to work aboard a humanitarian vessel for up to 30 consecutive days when required
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull items weighing up to 20 pounds
- Ability to work varied and irregular schedules, including extended hours during deployments
- Working knowledge of Spanish is desired
- AUVSI Trusted Operator Program (TOP) Level 2/3 certification or formal Aviation Safety/Crew Resource Management credentials desired
- Instructional / Train-the-Trainer Certification preferred, or documented professional background in flight instruction and technical curriculum delivery
