About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Develop, write, edit, and coordinate press releases, media statements, public information materials, talking points, presentations, and other Police Department communications
  • Respond to media inquiries and serve as the primary contact for news outlets
  • Coordinate communication during critical incidents and ensure timely, accurate public messaging
  • Manage the Department’s social media accounts, website content, and digital communication platforms
  • Create and maintain newsletters, announcements, and employee updates
  • Develop and maintain relationships with news media, the public, government entities, elected officials, City employees, and public interest groups
  • Advise the Assistant Chiefs and Chief of Police on media relations, public perception, and community engagement
  • Develop and execute comprehensive communication strategies, branding campaigns, and community outreach programs
  • Coordinate with City Communications staff to maintain consistent messaging across departments
  • Produce written, visual, and multimedia content for community engagement and outreach
  • Monitor public sentiment, media coverage, and online engagement
  • Maintain communication protocols, style guides, and content standards
  • Coordinate with City personnel regarding public information laws and open records requirements
  • Support community events, campaigns, and public education initiatives
  • Promote professionalism, accountability, teamwork, employee morale, and positive employee relations
  • Perform related duties and special projects as assigned
  • Interact professionally with the public, coworkers, contractors, vendors, consultants, and other stakeholders
  • Maintain regular and timely attendance
  • Work indoors in a normal office environment, with rare driving to locations and occasional exposure to moving traffic control situations

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree required; major in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or related field preferred
  • Minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or related field
  • Previous experience in a municipal government or public agency setting preferred
  • Regular and punctual attendance
  • Reliable transportation
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends and respond to emergency situations during non-scheduled work hours
  • Successfully complete required pre-employment screenings, including drug screen, criminal background check, driving record check, credit check, and polygraph, as applicable
  • Valid Texas driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
  • Obtain and maintain TCIC/NCIC and CJIS access
  • Meet CJIS criminal-history requirements; certain Class A misdemeanor, deferred adjudication, and felony convictions are permanent disqualifiers
  • Obtain Public Information Certification through the Texas Division of Emergency Management
  • Complete continuing education annually as required by the Texas Government Code
  • Strong writing, editing, and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in public information, media relations, communications, or digital content management
  • Proficiency with social media platforms, content management systems, and basic graphic or video tools
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure during emergencies or time-sensitive situations
  • Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and sound judgment
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and work independently with limited supervision
  • Ability to use standard office equipment and computer applications
  • Must meet the physical, hearing, vision, and voice requirements described for office duties
